Dr. Alan E. Smith is Chief Scientific Officer at Genzyme Corporation and has overall responsibility for the company's science.
He joined Genzyme upon its merger with Integrated Genetics in 1989. Prior to being head hunted to IG in 1984, he was head of the Biochemistry Division of the National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, London, England. Previous to that, he was a member of the scientific staff of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, London.
Alan Smith has published extensively on the genetic code and protein synthesis, tumour virology, eukaryotic cell biology and cystic fibrosis.
He read Natural Sciences at Christ's College, Cambridge, and studied for his Ph.D. at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge.
