Dr. Mueller joined Vertex in July 2003. As Chief Scientific Officer and Executive Vice President, Drug Innovation and Realization he provides strategic oversight for Vertex's worldwide drug discovery research programs as well as Pharmaceutical Development, QA/QC, Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management. Prior to coming to Vertex, Dr. Mueller served as Senior Vice President, Research and Development, for Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. where he was responsible for research and development of all drug candidates of the company's worldwide portfolio in North America, beginning in 1997. He led research programs in the areas of immunology, inflammation, cardiovascular disease and gene therapy on a global basis. During his time with Boehringer Ingelheim, Dr. Mueller oversaw the discovery of numerous development candidates, held several positions in basic research, medicinal chemistry and management in different centers of BI worldwide.

Dr. Mueller received both an undergraduate degree and a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the Albert Einstein University of Ulm, Germany, where he also holds a Professorship in Theoretical Organic Chemistry. He completed fellowships in Quantum Pharmacology at Oxford University and in Biophysics at Rochester University.

He is a (Board) member of various scientific and political societies, such as the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemikere (GDCh) and Verband Chemische Industrie (Germany), Royal Society of Chemistry (UK); IRI, RNA-Society, ASAP, AAAS (USA), Biotech, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Council of the USA-India Chamber of Commerce. Before he left Connecticut to join Vertex , Dr. Mueller was also a member of Govenor Roland's Council on Economic Competitiveness and Technology for the State of Connecticut (USA).
